Jonathan Fried

Jonathan T. Fried is Senior Advisor, Albright Stonebridge Group and Senior Associate, Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, and Advisor, Llewellyn Consulting in London, UK.

Until his 2020 retirement from the government, he was Prime Minister Trudeau’s “Sherpa” (personal representative) for the G20 and Coordinator for International Economic Relations, with a mandate encompassing COVID-related supply chain responses, Canada-Asia and other international trade/economic matters.

Mr. Fried held various positions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, including Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO; Canada’s Ambassador for Japan; Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean at the IMF; Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister; Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Department of Finance and Canada’s G7 and G20 Finance Deputy, Associate Deputy Minister; Assistant Deputy Minister Trade, Economic and Environmental Policy; Chief Negotiator on China’s WTC accession; Director General for Trade Policy; and chief counsel for NAFTA.

Jonathan obtained his BA and LLB from the University of Toronto, and LLM from Columbia.
