We leveraged our current Meditech system and developed a system whereby patients encountering our hospital would be flagged at registration if they had one or more of the following: Antibiotic Resistant Organisms, Specialized Care Plans and History of Violence.  The History of Violence flagging component also allowed us to be compliant with our Workplace Safety requirement to put into place a flagging program that appropriately conveyed the risk to the healthcare worker. The Specialized Care Plan flagging system allowed us to appropriately direct and guide healthcare providers when patients encountered the system (Mental Health Care and Safety Plans, complex medical conditions etc…).

We engaged two patient partners on our working group / implementation team. These individuals were instrumental in focusing our team on what the patient perspective was, especially in regards to the effects of having flags placed on Meditech and within the care environment.

We also interviewed patients for their input on our flagging program.
