Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation’s Labour, Birth & Postpartum Plan is created with the patient, modified as needed during the hospital stay, and used to plan the patient’s care and evaluate the experience prior to discharge. The immediate feedback the team receives about the family’s experience is a powerful tool for reflection and changing practices if needed. The introduction of this enhanced process has significantly impacted the patient and family’s experience as evidenced in patient interviews and quarterly satisfaction results. It has provided a framework for the clinical team to guide this valuable communication process that ensures a satisfying therapeutic relationship with the patient, as well as contributing to staff development and satisfaction.
