The BioFire FilmArray instrument has made the next generation of ‘syndromic testing’ available to a group of acutely ill patients presenting at RVH. Syndromic testing is when a number of different etiologies are tested with one test. In the case of patients who may have meningitis or encephalitis, a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid is tested for the 16 most common pathogens that cause these symptoms – 7 bacterial, 6 viral and a fungus. Within approximately 1h, the test is complete and the Microbiology Laboratory is able to provide real-time, relevant and accurate results.
