In 2012, prior to consolidation of inpatient and psychiatric emergency services at the new St. Catharines Site (SCS) hospital, the Mental Health and Addictions Program launched a Telemedicine Service through the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). The Service was initially intended to facilitate completion of mental health and addictions assessments from the emergency department (ED) at SCS to the Welland Hospital Site (WHS) and the Greater Niagara General Hospital (GNGH) site. However, once the success of the inter-site ED process was demonstrated with patients being able to receive the same level of mental health and addictions care in their home community without being transferred to the ED at SCS, the Telemedicine Service expanded to include remote outpatient assessments, psychiatrist on call assessments, and group participation from remote locations.
