There is growing evidence surrounding cancer therapies and treatments having adverse cardiovascular side effects for patients who have undergone and are currently undergoing active cancer treatments. To help improve patient outcomes and optimize oncology patients’ cardiac health, SHN, led by Dr. Kibar Yared, established the Cardio-Oncology Clinic in 2015. At Scarborough Health Network’s (SHN) Cardio-Oncology Clinic, a team of highly specialized cardiology oncology physicians and nurses work in partnership with oncologists, hematologists and pharmacists to detect, treat and manage cardiac dysfunction enabling uninterrupted cancer treatments.
Now internationally recognized as a Center of Excellence, SHN’s Cardio-Oncology Clinic has assessed, diagnosed, treated, and followed upwards of 1500 patients since its inception. We have set the metric for rapid access to cardiac care in the health region and beyond in patients with symptoms or signs of cardiovascular disease anywhere along their cancer treatment journey.
SHN’s Cardio-Oncology Clinic is the only established specialty clinic in the Greater Toronto Area supporting heart health for oncological patients. Given our large referral base and number of patients seen and treated, our clinic collaborates frequently with major academic centers and often participates in clinical trials. Subsequently, our Cardio-Oncology Clinic, serving a unique patient population, is at the center of evidence-based practice development in the cardio-oncology medical discipline.
