The Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation has developed Outbreak and Post-outbreak Standards of Practice. In response to a severe outbreak of nosocomial C difficile at the Uxbridge site, a team was formed consisting of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), Housekeeping, and Public Health. Best practices were reviewed by the team, and in a unique collaboration between IPAC and Housekeeping, a program was developed and implemented. This resulted in a rapid eradication of the infection. An ongoing post-outbreak practice is in place and rigorously followed. A single infection retriggers the outbreak protocol. The hospital sees its function as promoting chronic disease prevention. The purpose is to promote health and wellbeing among the staff and the community they serve.
