Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) continues to be a serious but largely preventable cause of blindness. SickKids’ pilot ROP project offered a strategy for remote retinal scanning, using telemedicine and store-and-forward files, capturing medical data and transmitting it via secure encrypted networks to be interpreted by an expert ophthalmologist at SickKids. SickKids is the only hospital in Canada to offer this service. Remote ROP eye examinations can result in significant cost savings to individual hospitals and to the overall health care system by reducing provincial travel costs and minimizing travel for a fragile infant population. It is less disruptive for families, physically and emotionally, when examinations are offered locally by trained nurse examiners.
