HSO 5030:2019 (E) Antimicrobial Stewardship Safety Intervention Standard – Public Review 

The public review of HSO’s revised Antimicrobial Stewardship Safety Intervention standard is taking place between August 12019 and September 30, 2019. 

Summary of changes 

This standard specifies requirements for developing, implementing, communicating, maintaining, and evaluating an antimicrobial stewardship program at the organizational level to address the challenges of antimicrobial use and resistance. 

The standard provides:  

  • Organizations with or wanting an antimicrobial stewardship program with requirements for a quality program 
  • Policy makers with a blueprint for the requirements to designate organizations that have an antimicrobial stewardship program in their jurisdictions 
  • External assessment bodies with measurable requirements to include in assessment programs 
  • Patients and families with information about what they can expect from organizations with antimicrobial stewardship programs  

The HSO 5030:2019 (E) Antimicrobial Stewardship Safety Intervention Standard is a revision of HSO’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Required Organizational Practice. As a Safety Intervention Standard, this standard can now be used alone or in conjunction with HSO 3001:2019 (E) Medication Management.   

The technical content of this standard is divided as follows: 

  • Planning and developing the antimicrobial stewardship program based on evidence and best practices
  • Implementing and maintaining the antimicrobial stewardship program
  • Prescribing antimicrobials and providing care
  • Monitoring antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance  

This standard specifies requirements for developing, communicating, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating an antimicrobial stewardship program at the organizational level in order to address challenges with antimicrobial use and resistance. 

HSO 3050:2019 (E) Antimicrobial Stewardship is intended to be used by organizations that provide acute care/ in-patient services. This standard is a normative reference in: 

  • HSO 3001:2018 Medication Management

This draft standard for public review specifies requirements for delivering quality and safe health services to patients and families. The revision of this standard is being led by HSO’s Working Group WG004 Antimicrobial Stewardship, with oversight by the HSO TC004 Medication Management. Overall development of the standard is under the authority of the HSO Standards Steering Committee. 

Technical Committee members include patients and family members; clinicians and health service administrators; government and health services stakeholders; and researchers. Working group members provide specific expertise in the realm of antimicrobial stewardship. 

This standard will be undergoing periodic maintenance. HSO will review and publish this standard on a schedule not to exceed five years from the date of publication.
