Status: Open for comment (15 days)

Responsible Technical Committee:TC004 – Medication Management

Scope: This standard specifies the responsibilities of health and social service organizations and their employees in providing safe, high quality, and people-centred care for cannabis users and their care providers. The standard will help organizations ensure safe, high quality of care related to cannabis, for both staff and patients by outlining organizational and provider responsibilities regarding operations, policies and procedures, training and education, and safe handling of cannabis for medical and recreational use. The standard may also inform cannabis policy and regulation.

Project Need:  Many health and social service organizations, including the Canadian Nursing Association and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, have reported on the lack of standards related to patient safety and cannabis and have expressed need for the development of a standard to protect the public and health/social service professionals. A National Standard of Canada on the “Quality for Cannabis Use in Health and Social Service Organizations” will provide knowledge to professionals and patients in the new environment of legalized cannabis, and will help to build the needed knowledge and skills of providers across health and social care settings.

Applicability: Global

Timeline: Estimated completion date is June 2022.

Posted on: July 29, 2020.
