A methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) work flow engine integrates the laboratory information on cultures with the patient admission transfer database to allow real time flagging of MRSA cases. This automation system, developed by the infection prevention and control service and information technology, ensures MRSA cases are identified, provides rapid notification of MRSA status, and improves the capacity to isolate appropriately. It is a highly efficient system that reduces the cost of surveillance resources.
