photoVOICE, an effective and well-researched grassroots group methodology typically used in the community to promote social change, was brought into a hospital setting for the first time in January 2010 to amplify the patient’s voice. Over the course of the previous two years, 42 patients participated in 6 groups to discover for themselves and express to others, through photographs and brief narrative captions, the fundamental importance of the following recovery philosophy principles in their lived experience: hope, self-direction, empowerment, respect, holism and peer support.
